Interlaken is a popular Swiss resort, lying between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz and surrounded by three mighty mountains – Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. The resort is probably best known for its winter skiing opportunities, with over 200km of pistes. But Interlaken is also a beautiful place to visit in the summer, with its historic paddle steamers on the lakes and miles of exquisite hiking routes.

Be sure to a funicular or railways trip up the mountains, keeping an eye out for the native ibexes, chamois and marmots, and sample some local fondue. Switzerland is a stunning country and you can be sure of a wonderful family camping holiday when you visit.

Things to do while you’re camping in Interlaken

The beautiful lakes on either side of Interlaken offer plenty of opportunities for family fun. Choose a clear day to take a cruise on the historic paddle steamers, or venture out onto the lakes in a pedal boat, kayak or rowboat. You can also hire a boat and driver to try out water-skiing or tube riding. The area is also full of beautiful hiking routes and you can pick up a free map at the tourist office, which details over 60 different hikes. Or explore the area on horseback, with trekking in the forests behind Interlaken.

Take the vintage funicular to the top of the Heimwehfluh for stunning views of Interlaken and Lake Thun. At the top you’ll find a fantastic adventure playground and model railways exhibition. There’s also an all-weather toboggan run for a fun way back down!

The whole family are sure to enjoy a trip to Bödelibad leisure park, with its indoor and outdoor pools, paddling pools, diving tower and a very long water slide! If the weather turns a little grey, head for Jungfrau Park – complete with indoor and outdoor playgrounds with slides, climbing structures, ball pit, bouncy castle, water play area, trampolines and go-karts.

Chocoholics will love The Funky Chocolate Club, where the whole family can create chocolate masterpieces with the help of professional chocolatiers. You’ll receive aprons, chef hats and all the ingredients and everything you make is yours to take home!

Finally, why not try your hand at trekking with goats? Tours last around 1-3 hours and a picnic with local produce or outdoor fondue can be provided. Kids will love the chance to channel their inner Heidi and Peter the goatherd!

Getting to Interlaken, Switzerland

Fly to Zurich, Basel or Bern with airlines such as EasyJet, Swiss or British Airways. From here you can take advantage of the excellent Swiss train system to travel on to Interlaken.
