The Costa del Azahar is located in the province of Castellon, the most northerly part of Valencia. Lying between Catalonia in the north and the Costa Blanca in the south, this picturesque coastline is full of beautiful golden beaches, rugged mountain backdrops and lovely nature parks. Costa del Azahar means ‘the orange blossom coast’ and, as you’d expect, it’s famous for its oranges and orange groves.
You’re sure to find a beautiful beach wherever you are in the region but some of the best can be found at Benicassim, Castello-Grao, Alcossebre, Peniscola, Oropesa, Torreblanca and Benicarló y Vinarós. Filled with many green spaces and stunning coastal views, Costa del Azahar is also less touristy than its neighbour Costa Blanca, meaning it’s perfect for families looking for a peaceful holiday.
Valencia, the largest city of Costa del Azahar, is well worth a visit. Take a walk to Castellon de la Plana, where you’ll find some gorgeous beaches. Peniscola is also a lovely town to stroll around with its stunning medieval castle. It also has one of the area’s best beaches, which your kids are sure to enjoy.
Of course, the coast is a big draw here and, like all of Spain, the beaches are of a high standard and it’s not hard to find a perfect one to visit. White sandy beaches are mixed with hidden coves that are perfect for scuba diving and snorkelling. Active kids will love the range of water sports available on the coast, such as sailing, water skiing and yachting.
Back in Valencia, animal lovers will enjoy a day out at the Bioparc Zoo, where the landscaping is designed to resemble the animals’ homelands. Little ones are also sure to love the Parque Gulliver, complete with playground, mini golf, skateboard park and two giant chessboards!
Dinosaur fans will enjoy the Museo Tiempo de Dinosaurios, full of dinosaur bones and fossils and located in Morella. Or try the Museo de Valltorta, 2km from Tirig, which provides a detailed overview of prehistoric art and the region’s famous rock paintings.
You will get the best range of flights from the UK to Valencia. Cheap flights are available with airlines such as EasyJet, Ryanair, Monarch and Iberia.
