Camping in Germany
Germany is the perfect destination for families who want a great camping holiday. English is widely spoken throughout the country, making it extremely accessible. And the lush, ever-changing landscapes and historical cities mean there’s plenty going on to keep everyone in the family entertained.
Germany is a short flight from the UK, with airlines such as Ryanair, BMI and KLM all offering flights. Eurostar from London also connects with German trains at Brussels, with a high-speed line to Cologne. The German rail network is extremely comprehensive and in major cities you’ll find the S-Bahn (suburban railway), trams, buses and, in Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Munich the U-Bahn (underground).
Perhaps Germany doesn’t immediately spring to mind when you’re looking for your next camping location, but the country is in fact ideally suited to this type of holiday. There are a vast variety of landscapes, with Southern Germany’s Black Forest and alpine Bavaria being two of the most popular. Because of its federal structure, Germany doesn’t have one dominant political and cultural centre, but several. There’s cosmopolitan Berlin, business centre Hamburg and artistic Munich, with Frankfurt-am-Main the primary financial centre.
Southern Bavaria is a fairy-tale setting, with Schloss Neuschwanstein (Neuschwanstein Castle) being one of its most impressive and romantic features. There’s also the Romantic Road – a 350km-long tourist route taking in some of Germany’s most idyllic medieval walled towns. Many of our campsites are located in the Black Forest, which stretches for 100 miles southwards from Karlsruhe to the Swiss boarder. The name comes from its dark forests of spruce and fir, but as well as woodland there are streams, lakes and waterfalls, mountain pastures and beautiful timber farmhouses. Busy Mums might appreciate a visit to Baden-Baden – considered the queen of spa towns.
With so much to see and do in Germany, staying at a campsite allows you to take full advantage of your stunning surroundings, whilst providing a relaxing base after a busy day’s exploring. Germany is served by a number of great camping companies, such as Canvas Holidays and Eurocamp.
